The work: lead magnets, sales email sequences, podcast show notes, Pinterest captions
Katie runs a successful marketing business, servicing small business owners. She’s also an Instagram trainer and website designer and hosts a brilliant podcast called The Whin Big, which is a UK-based marketing podcast for small business owners and freelancers.
How I supported Katie
Katie was looking for a copywriter to create podcast show notes that were valuable as a resource in their own right.
The podcast was broadcast weekly, so we created an effective workflow to make sure show notes were ready before each episode was published. I wrote the notes, researched links and topics and drafted worksheets to go with the show – meaning that every episode had added value.
Our work together expanded as Katie’s business grew. In addition to show notes, I wrote blog posts and supported her with the launch of her Instagram training workshops and programs. I also wrote lead magnets and supporting email sequences and developed a suite of Pinterest captions to use on the platform and elsewhere.
Why podcast show notes are so important
Katie shared every podcast episode on her website, so the show notes had a dual purpose: they acted as individual blog posts and were optimised for SEO, and they were a valuable asset to accompany the podcast episode.
If you publish your own podcast and don’t create valuable, user-friendly show notes then you’re missing a trick. Optimised show notes create a stronger bond with your listeners and drive people to your website. They can also act as a signpost to other parts of your website and content – giving you more opportunities to connect with visitors.
How to create better podcast show notes
If you’re currently relying on basic transcripts (or you haven’t got round to creating any show notes) then this is your sign to start doing it.
If you want to get started, here are a few tips on creating podcast show notes that add value to every episode:
1) Think about what you want the listener to do next, after listening to the podcast. Do you want them to visit your website or join your mailing list? When you know that, create a path through your show notes to help people do that exact thing. Can you add a link to a free download? Can you send them to more content on your website to look at? Think of the path before creating the show notes.
2) What are the top 3 take aways in the episode? People won’t always listen all the way through, so what 3 things are a essential for them to get the information you want to share? Use those three things as your structure.
3) Tease people with your podcast show notes. You don’t want them to get everything from the notes. Tell them the basics of what they need to know and then sign post them to the exact part of the podcast where they’ll hear more.
4) Call people out – in a good way. If people write in, leave a comment or a review, thank them at the end of the show and the end of every podcntiot show note you write. People loveto be thanked in public, so make that a feature and people are likely to pay more attention.
5) Give them something extra. If you always add a little extra value in your podcast show notes. Maybe it’s an exclusive free offer, a discount or an invitation to something that only readers can access. And talk about the extra goodies in your podcast episode so people are encouraged to read the show notes.
6) Can’t face doing all that after creating your episodes? That’s totally understandable – and exactly why I’m in business. Get in touch and let’s talk through your goals for your podcast show notes and I can get started on writing brilliant assets straight away.
What Katie said about our work together
“Working with Abi has been so valuable. Podcast show notes just happen every week without me needing to worry, and I spend no time at all editing them and making changes. It’s great having her write emails and social media content when I’m pressed for time, as she’s able to capture the voice of the business and make it fun and interesting, even when the subject matter doesn’t normally lend itself to that.
She massively increased my audience on Pinterest due to all the posts you’ve written (77% increase in engagements compared to the previous period). Projects that would have taken 3 months were completed in 3 weeks”
